Food Review: An affordable and sustainable fine dining option --- not just for your wallets, but for the environment too!
Recently, I tried out True Cost in Suntec city Shopping Mall, located on the hidden rooftop garden area, it boasts a cozy yet exquisite dining experience.
Our First Impressions
True Cost Singapore, a popular eatery that is dedicated to serving healthy and sustainable fine delicacies at affordable rates. As a food blogger, I was excited to see what this unique dining experience had to offer, and I was not disappointed.
Firstly, let's talk about the ambiance of the restaurant. The decor is simple yet chic, with natural wood accents and green plants adorning the walls. It gives off a cozy and welcoming vibe that instantly makes you feel at home. I especially loved the open kitchen concept, where you can see the chefs in action, preparing your meals with care and precision.
Now onto the food. True Cost has an impressive menu that is primarily plant-based, with options for vegetarians and vegans. They use only the freshest and organic ingredients, which really elevates the taste and nutritional value of their dishes. I started with the Salmon Riet ($11.55), which came together with pistachios and pita bread, it was a perfect appetizer to whet my appetite.
Salmon Riet with pistachio, pita
The Salmon Riet dish is an interesting and flavorful option, with the use of pistachios adding a nice crunch and nuttiness to the dish. The salmon mix is prepared in a pate or spread-like consistency, which makes it easy to spread on the pita bread. The pita bread serves as a great vessel for the salmon riet and adds a nice texture contrast to the dish.
For my main course, I tried the Grilled Salmon ($15.55) and Beef Cheek ($19.95), which were both an absolute delight.
Grilled Salmon with broccoli, tzatziki
Let's start with the Grilled Salmon. The dish was presented beautifully, with a generous portion of perfectly grilled salmon fillet. The fish was cooked just right, with a crispy skin on the outside and moist, flaky flesh on the inside. The flavor of the salmon was enhanced by a light marinade of herbs and spices, which added a subtle yet delicious taste to the dish.
The addition of broccoli provides a healthy dose of fiber and vitamins. I also appreciate the use of tzatziki sauce as it is a light and refreshing complement to the fish. The yogurt-based sauce provides a creamy and tangy flavor that balances the dish perfectly.
Overall, the Grilled Salmon dish at True Cost Singapore is a well-executed and healthy meal option. It's great to see the restaurant utilizing fresh and sustainable ingredients to create dishes that are not only delicious but also good for you. If you're looking for a satisfying and guilt-free meal, I would definitely recommend trying out this dish.
Beef Cheek with artichoke, taleggio mousse
The Beef Cheek dish is a decadent and indulgent option, with a hearty portion of slow-cooked beef cheek that was tender and succulent. The meat was full of flavor, with a rich and savory taste that melted in my mouth. The addition of artichoke and taleggio mousse provides a nice balance of flavors and textures to the dish, with the artichoke offering a tangy and slightly sweet taste that pairs well with the rich and savory flavor of the beef. The taleggio mousse, on the other hand, offers a creamy and mild taste that helps to enhance the dish overall. I particularly appreciated the effort that the chef put into making the beef cheek so tender and flavorful. This dish is definitely one for meat lovers, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a hearty and satisfying meal.
The Final Score
Overall, my experience with the Salmon Riet, Grilled Salmon and Beef Cheek dishes at True Cost Singapore was excellent. The food was fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. The restaurant's commitment to using sustainable and ethical ingredients is commendable, and it's clear that a lot of care and thought goes into the preparation of each dish.
The total cost was $60.60 for the food and a 1L bottle of cold still water, including GST and service charges. On top of that, it was dinner time and we had to pay a cover charge of $10/pax, so it added up to $80.60 total. However, this is quite affordable considering the quality of the food we get, the ambience of the dining experience and and the truly attentive service we received. The service staff were very kind and friendly, asking us multiple times if we wanted to top up the water, order dessert, and if we were unsure of anything, they were ready to answer any questions we had.
If you're looking for a restaurant that offers healthy and delicious food options while also a the ambience of a fine dining location at an affordable rate, I would definitely recommend giving True Cost Singapore a try, especially special occasions like an anniversary or a birthday. Meanwhile, I can't wait to come back and try the other dishes on the menu!
